About CastConditions

Your daily fishing forecast powered by solunar theory, weather science, and real-time data.

What Is CastConditions?

CastConditions is a free daily fishing forecast tool that predicts the best times to fish at your location. Whether you are planning a weekend bass trip in Texas, chasing tarpon in Florida, or targeting walleye in Minnesota, we provide a simple 1-5 star rating to help you decide when conditions will be optimal.

Our forecasts are based on proven fishing science: solunar theory (the influence of lunar cycles on fish behavior), barometric pressure trends (how weather changes affect feeding activity), and wind speed (which impacts water conditions and light penetration). We combine these factors into a single score so you do not have to.

CastConditions is designed for both beginners learning to fish and experienced anglers fine-tuning their approach. Enter your zip code or select a location, and we will show you today's fishing conditions and the factors that drive the daily bite.

Solunar Theory: The Science Behind Fishing

Solunar theory is the study of how the moon's position and phases influence animal behavior, particularly feeding. This theory was developed by John Alden Knight in 1926 and has been validated by decades of fishing research and angler observations.

Major and Minor Solunar Peaks

During a 24-hour period, there are four solunar events: two major peaks (highest feeding activity) and two minor peaks (moderate feeding activity). These occur at predictable times based on the moon's position relative to your location.

  • Major Peaks: Occur when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot (opposite position). These are the prime fishing windows — fish are most aggressive and willing to bite.
  • Minor Peaks: Occur when the moon is at the horizon. These are secondary opportunities with good bite potential, especially for aggressive species.
  • Slack Periods: Between peaks, fish activity drops. Bites are possible but less likely. Use these times to scout, relocate, or practice technique.

Lunar Phases and Fish Behavior

The moon's phase affects fish behavior over longer periods. Here is what research and angling tradition tell us:

  • New Moon: Darkness increases predator confidence. Fish feed aggressively throughout the day and night.
  • Waxing Crescent: Increasing light moderates activity. Early morning and dusk remain best.
  • First Quarter: Half-lit conditions continue to favor low-light periods. Midday fishing becomes less productive.
  • Waxing Gibbous: Bright conditions approaching full moon. Fish become more cautious. Focus on dawn, dusk, and structure.
  • Full Moon: Maximum light can suppress daytime biting. Night fishing often produces best results.
  • Waning Phases: Similar patterns to waxing phases but in reverse. Low-light periods remain peak windows.

Barometric Pressure and Fish Activity

Fish are sensitive to barometric pressure changes. Their swim bladders expand and contract with pressure, affecting their buoyancy, feeding drive, and location in the water column.

Rising Pressure

Rising barometric pressure (fair weather arriving) activates fish. They become more aggressive feeders, move shallower, and spread out from cover. This is typically the best condition for fishing.

Falling Pressure

Falling pressure (storms approaching) suppresses activity. Fish often refuse to feed, hold tight to deep structure, and become difficult to catch. However, the transition periods can be excellent if you are already fishing.

Stable Pressure

Stable conditions (no major change) produce moderate activity. Fish feed normally but without the aggression of rising pressure. Skill and technique become more important.

Our scoring system rewards rising pressure and penalizes falling pressure. A rapid rise (0.05+ inches in 3 hours) signals excellent fishing ahead. A rapid fall (0.05+ inches falling) suggests waiting for stabilization.

Wind Speed and Water Conditions

Wind directly affects water conditions and fish behavior:

  • Light Winds (under 3 m/s): Calm water allows light penetration. Wary fish feel exposed and feed carefully. Best for clear-water species and finesse techniques.
  • Moderate Winds (3-8 m/s): Wave action creates chop, reducing light penetration and making fish bolder. Ideal conditions for most species and presentations.
  • Strong Winds (over 8 m/s): Rough water can suppress feeding as fish struggle to maintain position. Safety becomes a concern. Fishing is possible near structure but challenging.

How to Use CastConditions

  1. Enter Your Zip Code: Use the search bar on the homepage to look up your fishing location. Our tool uses real-time weather data for your area.
  2. Check the Daily Score: Each day receives a 1-5 star rating. 5 stars means optimal conditions; 1 star means challenging. Plan your trips accordingly.
  3. Review the Factors: We display the lunar phase, barometric pressure trend, and wind speed for your location. Use these to predict feeding windows.
  4. Explore by Species: Use the Species dropdown to find conditions specific to bass, trout, tarpon, walleye, and many others. Each species has unique preferences.
  5. Explore by Region: Browse state pages to see top fishing locations and regional conditions. Many states have multiple prime fishing zones.
  6. Read the Tips: Each species and region page includes proven techniques, seasonal patterns, and gear recommendations.

Seasonal Fishing Patterns

Beyond solunar cycles, fish behavior shifts seasonally. Water temperature, spawning cycles, and food availability all play major roles:

Spring (March-May)

Spawning season for many species. Bass move shallow to nests. Trout become active as water warms. Excellent for location-specific tactics near spawning areas.

Summer (June-August)

Heat stress affects freshwater species. Fish move to cooler, deeper water. Early morning and evening become critical. Saltwater species peak during summer heat.

Fall (September-November)

Prime fishing season. Fish feed aggressively to build winter reserves. Water temperatures are ideal for activity. This is often the most consistent fishing period.

Winter (December-February)

Cold water slows metabolism but creates opportunity for patient anglers. Fish concentrate in deep structure. Slow presentations and precise solunar timing are essential.

Data Accuracy & Disclaimers

CastConditions provides forecasts based on established fishing science and real-time weather data. However, fishing is inherently unpredictable. Many factors beyond our scoring system affect success:

  • Local water clarity, temperature, and habitat
  • Angler skill and technique
  • Recent fishing pressure and angler activity
  • Species-specific migrations and movements
  • Unexpected weather or water condition changes
  • Baitfish availability and food cycles

Our 5-star prediction gives you the best probability of success, but a 1-star day can still produce. Conversely, perfect conditions do not guarantee a bite. Use our forecast as one tool in your decision-making, combined with local knowledge, recent reports, and your experience.

Scoring Methodology

Every CastConditions forecast combines three independent signals into a single 1–5 star score using a weighted algorithm. Here is the exact formula:

Lunar Phase Score (0–2 pts)

  • New Moon / Full Moon: 2 points — peak gravitational influence, most aggressive feeding
  • First Quarter / Last Quarter: 1.5 points — moderate influence
  • Waxing or Waning Crescent / Gibbous: 1 point — lower influence, focus on low-light periods

Barometric Pressure Score (0–2 pts)

We compare the current pressure reading to the reading from 3 hours prior (converted from hPa to inHg):

  • Rising (+0.05 inHg or more): 2 points — strongest feeding trigger
  • Stable (within ±0.05 inHg): 1 point — normal activity
  • Falling (−0.05 inHg or more): 0 points — suppressed feeding

Wind Speed Score (0–2 pts)

  • Under 3 m/s (calm): 2 points — ideal clarity for finesse fishing
  • 3–8 m/s (light): 1 point — good chop, fish are bolder
  • 8–15 m/s (moderate): 0.5 points — manageable but challenging
  • Over 15 m/s (strong): 0 points — suppressed feeding, safety concern

Final Score Calculation

The three scores are summed (max 6 pts), then scaled to 1–5 stars using the formula:stars = clamp(round(((sum − 1) / 5) × 4 + 1), 1, 5)

Coastal and tidal pages display an additional tide direction indicator (incoming vs. outgoing) sourced from the nearest NOAA tide station. Tide direction is presented as context alongside the score rather than modifying it, since tidal importance varies significantly by species and habitat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CastConditions accurate?

Solunar theory and pressure trends are supported by extensive research and angler experience. However, fishing success depends on many variables. Our score improves your odds but does not guarantee results.

Can I fish on 1-star days?

Absolutely. 1-star days are challenging, not impossible. Patient anglers with skill and knowledge still catch fish. But statistically, 4-5 star days offer better odds with less effort.

How often is weather data updated?

Open-Meteo updates every hour. When you check our site, you are seeing the latest available conditions for your location.

Do tides matter for freshwater fishing?

Tides are critical for saltwater species in coastal areas. In freshwater (lakes, rivers), tides do not apply, but solunar peaks still affect fish behavior.

Should I only fish peak windows?

Peak windows maximize your odds, but good fishing happens all day. Use slow periods to scout new areas or work on technique. Being on the water beats not being on the water.

How do I report incorrect data?
